2005 SCTP Program

Grand American Results

Pike’s Peak Gun Club sent five squads of SCTP shooters to the final Grand American in Vandalia, Ohio on August 9. This is the fourth year that we have sent teams to the Grand and the first year that we have come home with the top prize for one of our teams. Last year the Junior Experienced Squad came home with third place. This year the Rookies topped them by taking FIRST in their division! Remember that to win, you had to be one of the top three squads in the main event and then maintain your lead through a shoot-off.

Pike’s Peak Tater Tots

Our Rookie squad won their class breaking 860 birds in the main event to go into the shoot-off in first place with a 13 bird lead. In the shoot-off they added 8 birds to their lead. This was particularly notable because, after a long day in the hot sun, these kids (1 third grader and 4 fifth graders) didn’t get to shoot until about 11 PM. They really put on a great show under the lights.

Shown above are the Pike’s Peak Tater Tots: Christopher Gwinner - 184, Ben Larson - 184, Jacob Warner - 192, Sean Delmonte - 159 and Jordan Carter - 141, along with their coaches Keith Hansen and Tony Farinaro.

Dust in the Wind

The Junior Experienced squad, Dust in the Wind, composed of Levi Nily - 173, Dabnee Hansen - 172, Laurel Farinaro - 167, Kyle Bartlett - 165 and Jordan Westfall - 184 did not fare as well as the Rookies. While they shot well compared to their practice averages (breaking 861 out of 1000 birds) they simply ran into some incredible competition. The winning team broke 949 birds and the lowest score of the three invited into the shoot-off was 944.

Blue Rock Dusters

The Senior Novice squad, Blue Rock Dusters, broke 870 birds, again better than their practice average, but suffered a fate similar to that of the Junior squad. The top three teams in this division went into the shoot-off with scores of 972, 957, and 944. The squad consists of A.J. Lee - 177, Ryan Milazzo - 182, Joshua Carter - 154, Tanis Hinson - 186, and Tyler Remedes - 171. They were coached by Bill Bolch and Bill Healy.

The two senior experienced squads went to the Grand knowing that they were breaking scores similar to those that won last year. While their hopes were high, they ran into a small problem. The bar had been raised. The top three squads in the main event broke 976, 979 and 980 birds. Our squads, on the other hand, broke 953 and 957 birds. They shot very well but it just wasn’t good enough. We did have two shooters who ran 100 straights, Cory Jones and Justin Parker. Cory actually had the longest straight run of the group at 188 straight! High gun for all of our squads was taken by Justin Parker who broke 198 out of 200.

The Juggernauts

The Juggernauts: Beau Bolch - 194, Kevin Westfall - 191, Cory Jones - 197, John Larson - 188 and Shane Herman - 187. Total birds = 957

Guns and Roses

Guns and Roses: Billy Healy - 192, Justin Parker - 198, Brandon Nily - 190, David West - 194 and B.J. Ross – 179. Total birds = 953.

Overall Results of the SCTP Match

There were 1564 SCTP shooters at the Grand this year. If you count the alternate squads, Tennessee and Ohio brought 28 and 27 squads respectively. They appear to have a tremendous program. Indiana followed with 20 squads. Our 8 squads looked kind of puny in comparison; we have a ways to go to catch up to those states!
