I've been asked more than once why the club has instituted an RSO program on the rifle and pistol ranges.

The first and foremost answer is to maintain safe ranges. But a near second is the preservation of club infrastructure and resources. Both ranges have been subjected to considerable damage, the bulk of which I have always attributed to benign negligence and inattentiveness. That's been an acceptable answer for anyone that's asked. Until the other day. While setting up equipment for the SRPM, it was pointed out that one of the recently installed target backer cable posts had sustained some damage. Upon further inspection, it became obvious that the damage was due to neither benign negligence nor inattentiveness. It was due to willful destruction of club property. There can be no other reason.

Obviously if the shooter had been unable to attach an acceptable target backer to the cables, the object of his scorn clearly specified the appropriate remedy. It should be noted that these posts were installed during our last range workday which involved over a dozen volunteer members, several of whom labored for over 8 hours to complete the day's tasks. The shooter that damaged this post obviously holds their efforts in contempt. Safety on the range and preservation of its resources are the duty of every club member using the rifle and pistol ranges, not just the responsibility of the RSOs. If any member observes another shooter acting unsafely or damaging club resources, please take the initiative to intervene or report them to the clubhouse. This kind of activity cannot be allowed to continue.
